It has a molded footbed that will provide you with additional comfort and cushioning.

Due to the lightness of the Fresh Foam, this running shoe is much lighter in weight than 990.

However, if you are used to an engineered mesh upper, you may not get that same kind of flexibility from this upper.

Also, you can see a lot of sewing to put together the leather and the mesh. However, that will not irritate your skin or make you uncomfortable in any way.

It has flat laces that will secure the midsection of your feet and the well-padded tongue and collar will keep the ankle joint stable.

The upper of New Balance 880 comes with Double Jacquard Mesh and provides you with a fully customized fit.

It is softer than the upper of New Balance 990 and will move with your feet. This will provide you with a non-restrictive movement and you can run more naturally in them.

Also, the external heel counter reduces the movement of the foot and provides you with increase comfort.

As with many of the running shoes, this latest version of New Balance 880 has also adopted the added Achilles support. This is not as prominent as the 860, but it is there. This reduces the heel slip and will help you to avoid accidents.

New Balance 860 Vs. 880 – A head to head comparison

In the above sections, we have covered a brief overview and some major differences between New Balance 880 and New Balance 860.

In the following sections, we have covered an in-depth comparison of the major features of these two shoes.

Outsole

The outsole of New Balance 860 is made from blown rubber to offer you good grip, durability, and peace of mind.

It is a full contract outsole that will provide you with a smooth heel-to-toe transition. For that, you have some grooves in the rearfoot and some in the forefoot.

The forefoot has four segments with two of them being half segments. The area under the first metatarsal is fused to provide you with a bit of added support during toe-off.

The heel area and the frontal part of the forefoot have harder rubber. This ensures longevity to these shoes. Also, the mid-section has a different firmness rubber to provide you with optimal flexibility.

The outsole of New Balance 880 is made from blown rubber for similar reasons as mentioned earlier and is full-contact.

The appearance of the outsole is similar to that of New Balance 860 and contains two separate kinds of rubber for the heel, the frontal area of the forefoot, and the midsection.

Also, the use of the flex grooves are also similar to this running shoe and also a similar kind of two-colored scheme is being used.

The only difference that you may observe in these two outsoles is the patterns that are printed on this shoe.

The pattern that is present on the New Balance 860 is made of parallel lines on the forefoot and the heel. For the midsection, you have a more like a honeycomb pattern.

However, for New Balance 880 the entire outsole has the honeycomb pattern.

The grip and durability of these two shoes are similar and will keep you stable during your runs.

Midsole

The midsole of New Balance 860 is made from Fresh Foam.  It is a plush foam that is made after taking inputs from numerous athletes like you and me.

It is one of the best cushioning materials present in today’s market and will provide you with a soft and stable cushioning underfoot.

Although it is a stable running shoe it will not help you with severe overpronation. It is a moderate stability shoe and it will provide you with a good amount of pronation control within this limit.

The stack height is also good for this shoe. The forefoot stack has a height of 24mm and the heel stack is around 34mm. This makes the heel-to-toe offset is around 10mm.

To control the pronation, this midsole has a medial post which is actually a higher density foam in the midfoot. This corrects your pronation and will provide you with a more natural running experience.

The midsole of New Balance 880 is made from Fresh Foam X. It is a lighter version of Fresh Foam but provides you with a similar experience.

It is softer and delivers a plush cushioning. Also, the sides have honey-comb like grooves to reduce the overall weight of the shoe and to add some more flexibility.

It has the same stack height as 860 with the forefoot stack at 24mm and heel stack at 34 mm. This makes the heel-to-toe offset around 10mm.

Being a neutral running shoe, it has the same density foam throughout the shoe. Also, for additional comfort and cushioning it comes with a molded footbed.

Upper

The upper of New Balance 860 is made from Engineered Mesh. It provides you with a soft and secure mesh that will provide you with a comfortable fit.

This mesh moves with your foot to provide you with a non-restrictive running experience.

Also, the upper of this shoe is very stylish. It has an ultra-heel and edgy pattern made on the forefoot.

The ultra heel reduces the irritation of the Achilles and provides you with a more secured fit.

Also, the heel area has a sharp contrast with the rest of the upper adding more character to the overall shoe.

The upper of New Balance 880 is made from Double Jaquered Mesh that provides you with excellent fit and comfort.

Also, the molded external heel counter reduces your heel movement providing you with exceptional ankle stability.

My only complaint is the upper style quotient. It is rather bland compared to 860. Otherwise, you have a fantastic running shoe in your hand.

Weight

In terms of weight, New Balance 880 is lighter than New Balance 860. This may be because New Balance 880 uses Fresh Foam X which is lighter than Fresh Foam and is used by New Balance 860.

However, if you compare the previous New Balance 880 with the previous one, you will find that the current version weighs a bit more than it.

New Balance 880 weighs around 8.7oz /247g for women and 10.5oz/298g for men.

New Balance 860 weighs around 9.6oz/272g for women and 11.4oz/324g for men.

Price

If you compare the prices of New Balance 880 vs 860, you will not find any difference. This is for the latest models that we are talking about which are 880 v11 and 860 v11.

This is almost expected as these two running shoes belong to the same New Balance 800 series. I thought, that since New Balance860 is a stability running shoe which is a kind of specialized shoe, it will cost more.

Also, another thought that came to mind before researching the price is that, since New Balance 860 uses fresh foam and not fresh foam x, it will cost less. So, honestly, I was a bit surprised when I found that both of them are at the same price point.

This actually helps you to settle on the one which you liked the most without thinking about the budget.

In the above sections, you will find almost all the similarities and differences between New Balance 880 and New Balance 860.

However, there are few alternatives that can perform at a similar level as these two running shoes. We have included them in the sections below for you to take a look at.

Similar Shoes

Running Shoes Similar To New Balance 880 v11

New Balance 880 has Fresh Foam X in the midsole which is a soft and smooth cushioning. It will provide you with exceptional impact resistance.

Being a neutral running shoe, it will be able to help neutral runners and runners with mild to medium underpronation.

Also, the in-shoe environment is also comfortable as this has a no-sew upper.

We think Brooks Ghost will be able to provide you with a similar running experience. It has full-length soft DNA LOFT cushioning and having a no-sew upper. This provides you with a plush feel and adaptable cushioning while running.

This is the reason we think Brooks Ghost to be one of the best alternatives to New Balance 880.

Conclusion

In the above sections, we have detailed almost all the similarities and differences between New Balance 860 Vs New Balance 880. However, we liked New Balance 860 a bit more than New Balance 880.

Although the selection between these two shoes will be mostly dictated by the type of pronation you have…still, one thing that I liked about New Balance 860 is the style and the ultra heel. This shoe feels very stable and your heels will not slip and you may not have to face accidents.

The cushioning of both of these shoes is comfortable and cushy although 880 feels a bit softer.

However, if the styling is rather dull and the ultra heel is not yet there in 880.

These are the reasons that we chose New Balance 860 over New Balance 880.

If you have any of these shoes, please share your experience with us. We would love to include that in this post.

New Balance 890 Vs. New Balance 880 – A head to head comparison

In the above sections, we have covered a brief overview and some broader differences between New Balance 880 and New Balance 890.

Although from the same manufacturer and belonging to a very popular 800 series, these two running shoes are completely different, be their weight, the kind of cushioning, or the way they look.

In the following sections, we have compared each part and a couple of relevant features that may help you to pick the perfect New Balance running shoe for you.

Outsole

The outsole of New Balance 890 is made from REVLite with rubber pods. This is a ground contact outsole and will provide you with lightweight cushioning. It is also abrasion-resistant and will provide you with a good grip.

However, some of the users are not satisfied with the durability of this outsole. For some, this falls apart too early (not sure about the amount of daily usage), so you may want to further investigate that.

The heel area and the rubber pod are lined with a different and harder rubber to protect them from wear and tear.

The outsole rubber covers almost the entire surface of the midsole and thus protects it from falling apart early.

The outsole of New Balance 880 is made from blown rubber. It is a durable rubber that will provide you with exceptional grip and will improve the lifespan of this running shoe.

Although it’s a full-contact outsole, it is not a continuous piece of rubber. There is a harder rubber lining along the heel and the tip of the forefoot. Then there are two softer rubber segments under the balls of the foot and arch section.

Also, they have carefully left out the flex grooves areas of the midsole, to provide better flexibility and smoother heel-to-toe movement.

Midsole

The midsole of New Balance 890 is made from FuelCell. This delivers a propulsive feel help you to drive forward.

This will provide you with good cushioning and will adapt to your feet. However, this sole is stiffer than Fresh Foam and you can run only up to 10K. Beyond that, this sole may not be very comfortable.

The energy return of this shoe is good due to the stiffer sole and you will be able to enjoy a cushy and responsive ride.

This midsole is good as a daily trainer and is perfect for shorter runs.

The midsole of New Balance 880 has Fresh Foam X. It is a pushier cushion than Fresh Foam and delivers a soft underfoot feel.

This will adapt to your running and will provide you with customized cushioning. This is also a great long-distance running shoe and will keep you comfortable throughout the entire running distance.

However, due to the softness, the responsiveness of this midsole is a little dampened. You may not find it as responsive as the New Balance 890. If you like to run longer distances then this can be your perfect companion

Also, to provide you with added cushioning, it has a molded footbed for additional comfort.

Upper

The upper of New Balance 890 has lightweight synthetic mesh. It is breathable and will provide you with a customized fit.

This material stretches with your feet providing you with a comfortable and secure fit.

The upper of New Balance 890 is very aesthetic. It has a bold-colored and super thick angular stripe on the side with the New Balance logo printed on it.

This provides it with a trendy casual look which is appropriate when you take it out on a run or wear it with your jeans.

It has that extended Achilles support to provide you with a more comfortable and secure fit. Also, the 890 printed on the back of the heel area adds to the overall appeal of this shoe.

Overall, it looks very stylish and trendy and will make you stand out in the crowd.

The New Balance 880 has Double Jacquard Mesh which provides you with proper support and stretch.

It will provide you with an excellent fit and will move your feet during running. It has a contrasting color forming a dark and light contrast and a patterned look to this upper.

It looks elegant and provides you with a confident demeanor. One sharp contrast that I liked is the heel color and the tongue are. They have a sharp contrast with the rest of the upper providing you with a more upbeat look.

It has a molded external heel counter which will lock the heel in place and will reduce the movement of the foot and increases comfort.

Also, there is an edgy pattern present on the heel counter providing a more trendy look to this shoe.

Weight

In terms of weight, New Balance 880 is more than New Balance 890.

New Balance 880 weighs around 8.7oz /247g for women and 10.5oz/298g for men.

New Balance 890 weighs around 7.2oz/204.11g for women and 8.4oz/238.13g for men.

Price

The price of New Balance 880 is a bit more than New Balance 890. If you compare the prices of the latest versions, you will see a difference of around $10.

It could be because New Balance 880 uses newer technology than New Balance 890. However, the difference is not too much and you should choose the one which is more comfortable for you.

Nike Vomero Vs Brooks Ghost – A head to head comparison

In the above sections, you will get an overview and some basic differences between Brooks Ghost and Nike Vomero.

In the following sections, you will get a much more in-depth comparison of these two running shoes.

Outsole

Nike Vomero is a neutral running road shoe. It has high abrasion rubber present on the outsole.

It provides you with an excellent grip and keeps you stable while you run. It has an adjusted waffle grid entended from almost one side to the other side of the outsole and it dissipates the impact properly throughout the sole.

Also, it is a full-contact outsole and protects the much softer midsole.

The Brooks Ghost also has high abrasion rubber placed on the outsole. However, on the lateral side of the heel, you have a more durable and harder carbon rubber that provides you with excellent heel durability.

This is great for the heel strikers who usually face early damage to the heel area.

Also, you have cutouts for the flex grooves that improve the flexibility of the shoe. However, the gap under the first metatarsal is removed which improves the support for the underpronators.

This effectively reduces the number of outsole grooves on the blown rubber from three to two and a half.

Overall, this is a highly durable sole and you can put in a lot of miles.

Midsole

The midsole of Brooks Ghost is made from DNA LOFT. It is a soft cushioning that is adaptable and will provide you with excellent shock absorption.

It is durable, resilient, and will not pack out under your weight. This kind of midsole material is excellent for day-to-day running and also for longer distances.

The density of the midsole is the same on both the lateral and the medial sides. This provides uniform softness under your feet and an extremely smooth heel-to-toe transition.

Also, it has Omega Flex Grooves that provide you with an easier heel-to-toe transition.

The midsole of Nike Vomero has ZoomX cushioning in heels. This provides you with a good energy return and provides you with a responsive feel.

Also, it has the Air Zoom Unit in the forefoot which is twice the size of its previous version. This provides you with excellent cushioning at every step.

Upper

The upper of Nike Vomero has a combination of engineered mesh and some overlays.

This mesh is highly breathable and provides you with good ventilation. This also has perforations on the upper to provide you with improved breathability.

It has a heel clip that will keep your feet secure throughout the run. Also, it will keep you comfortable with long-distance running as well.

The upper of Brooks Ghost has a 3D fit print mesh. This mesh wraps around your feet providing you an excellent fit.

Also, this stretches with your feet to provide you with a non-restrictive running experience.

The heel counter in this version is updated and you can feel an excellent fit during running.

The collar padding and the tongue thickness are just right and the cut near the ankle is also just right.

Also, in this version of Brooks Ghost, flat laces are introduced which are great and will not come undone while running.

Weight

In terms of weight, Brooks Ghost is imperceptibly heavier than Nike Vomero.

Brooks Ghost weighs around 9oz/255.1g for women and 9.9oz/280.6g for men.

Nike Vomero weighs around 8.57oz / 243g for women and 9.87oz / 280g for men.

Price

Brooks Ghost will cost you way less than Nike Vomero. If you go for the current version of Brooks Ghost the price difference with Nike Vomero may come up to around $40.

This is a significant difference and if you are not a die-hard fan of Nike, go with Brooks Ghost. It is an excellent shoe and will perform very well.

In the above sections, you will find almost all the similarities and differences between Brooks Ghost and Nike Vomero.

However, we think there are a couple of other shoes that will be good alternatives to these two. We have included them in the sections below for you to have a look at.
