Are Rowing Machines Hard On Your Back?

Are Rowing Machines Hard On Your Back?

Last Updated: July 4th, 2022

Rowing is one of the best forms of cardio. It can be very effective for your weight management. However, will it cause more harm than good? Today I’m going to answer the question, ‘Are rowing machines hard on your back?

Let’s find out…

Are Rowing Machines Hard On Your Back

Are Rowing Machines Hard On your Back?

No, rowing machines are not hard on your back unless you already have back problems. Based on the severity of the back problem, your approach towards your rowing machine will change.

Rowing machines are not hard on your back. In different phases of the rowing action, different parts of your back get involved.

However, the major part of the back that gets used is the upper back. It has some of the biggest group of muscles and with rowing, they get strengthened up and they tone and develop.

When you are pulling the handles back and to the last part of the drive, your lower back gets stiffened a bit, providing additional support to your core.

This is also a result of the upper back muscle contracting completely at this phase.

However, if you have lower back issues and pain, then this stiffening of the lower back will only aggravate the pain.

Also, if you have a slipped disc or some similar issues back then also you should not be using the rowing machine.

If you have weak lower back muscles, then also, it is better to first strengthen your back muscles, then start rowing.

Who is more prone to back pain?

People who have a sedentary lifestyle, like those of us who have corporate jobs, or those who already have issues with the back.

Back pain can also be a result of excessive weight. When your hip region has to bear additional weight, then you may have these back issues.

OK…if you cannot do rowing with a bad back, then is all hope lost…

That sounded dramatic…but you get the gist…

Actually, if you have a bad back, then you can still do rowing, but you will have to strengthen your back first.

Below are some routine exercises that you need to do to strengthen your back…

First of all, if you have a weak back or a stiff one, you need to improve the flexibility of your back and spine.

For that, the best exercise is Cat-Cow Strech.

This will help you to improve the overall mobility of your back.

Here is how you will perform it…

Cat-Cow Stretch

The cat-cow stretch improves the circulation between your vertebrae and it helps in relieving back pain and stress.

Steps:

  • Start with both of your knees and hands on the floor and your back parallel to the ground.
  • Now dip your spine and raise your head up.
  • Now arch your spine up and dip your head in between your shoulders and hands.
  • Repeat 20 times

If you want to row and have back pain, then apart from improving mobility, you have to strengthen your back…

Here is a simple routine that most of you will be able to perform with your back pain…However, as a cautionary measure, please check with your doctor before starting this routine…

Exercise routine for back strengthening for rowing:

Bhujangasana

Bhujangasana will provide you with excellent benefits like:

  • Strengthening the whole back.
  • Strengthening the spine.
  • Stretches lungs, abdomen, and shoulders.
  • Strengthens and tones the buttock area.
  • Relives stress and fatigue.

These are only some of the benefits of Bhujangasana. However, there are many more and this is one of the most beneficial yoga poses for not only your back but also your whole body.

Steps:

  • Lie down on your stomach.
  • Place your palms flat on the ground at the side of your chest.
  • Tuck in your elbows so that they are touching the sides of your body.
  • With the help of your back muscles, raise the upper part of your body. (Don’t put pressure on your arms to raise your body)
  • Stay there for a couple of breaths and then release.
  • Do this 10 times, 3 sets.

Prone Cobra

This is a variation of a cobra that will strengthen your lower back especially…

The benefits of prone cobra exercise are:

  • Strengthens lower back.
  • Strengthens hip and thigh muscles.
  • Improves back flexibility.
  • Improves range of motion.
  • Improves posture.

Steps to perform Prone Cobra:

  • Lie down on your stomach.
  • Arms are spread to the side in form of a ‘T’ with palms flat on the floor.
  • Keep your head aligned with your spine and not raise up or hang down.
  • Now start raising your upper body as high as possible while simultaneously rotating your palms upwards. (Thumbs pointing up)
  • Hold this position for a couple of seconds and return to the starting position.
  • Do not relax all the way to the floor and go back up.
  • Do this 10 times, 3 sets.

Lying back single leg raise

Benefits of lying back single leg raise:

  • Strengthening your core muscles.
  • Strengthens your lower back, and hips.
  • Improves flexibility of the lower back and hips.

Steps:

  • Lie down on your stomach.
  • Arms by your side.
  • With the help of your glutes and lower back muscles, raise one leg as high as possible.
  • Hold it for a couple of seconds.
  • Return to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.
  • Do this 10 times for each leg, 3 sets.

Plank

Benefits of plank exercise include:

  • Strengthening of core muscles.
  • Strengthening of back muscles, hip, and glutes.
  • Improving your stamina and focus.

Steps

  • Place your elbows under your shoulders with your forearms stretched in front.
  • Make a fist out of your palms with your thumbs sticking up.
  • Now extend your legs backward so that, your entire body is in a straight line.
  • Hold this for as long as possible.
  • Do this 3 times.

How will you know that your back is sufficiently strengthened for rowing?

Your back is sufficiently strengthened for rowing when you will experience reduced back pain from sitting, standing, or doing common tasks. If you are into a sedentary lifestyle, then also, you will not be feeling back pain if your back is strengthened enough.

Most of the common types of back pain arise from weak muscles, bad posture, and losing mobility of the back.

However, this can be reversed when you have enough strength in your back. For that, you will have to work specifically on your back muscles so that they can gain strength and develop.

The above routine is very effective and it specifically targets all of the muscles of the back and will help them to develop.

But it will take some time and you will have to be patient. Although the pain may not be eliminated, you will be able to feel the difference in a couple of weeks.

Once you have seen considerable improvement in your back pain, you can start rowing. However, stop it immediately, if you find that your back pain is increasing.

Conclusion

As we have seen above, rowing will not cause back pain and is not hard on your back. However, if you already have back pain, it will increase with rowing.

This is the reason that you should first find a way to reduce the pain and then try to row.

Also, back pain is not always caused by a sedentary lifestyle or a slipped disc. It can be something like a bad mattress, or a bad sitting chair.

Whatever it is, find out the root cause and try to fix that.

My Final Opinion

Concept2 Model D with PM5 Performance Monitor is hands down the best in 400 lb category. Best WaterRower Rowing Machine For 1000 lb Weight Capacity

Water Rower Classic Rowing Machine

Best water rowing machine for obese people
This rowing machine is unique as it will give you a retro feel due to the Solid Ash and Stained Honey Oak frame. Wood tends to absorb sound and vibration better, so you will get a more stable ride with this beauty. Adding to this unique experience is the fact that this rowing machine is handcrafted and has a water flywheel. Hence, it will give you the closest natural rowing experience along with the swooshing sound of water. 🙂 The flywheel is enclosed in a water tank and will give you self-regulated resistance. This model comes with a Series 4 Performance Monitor and will track your workout intensity, distance, stroke rate per min, heart rate, and more. To save space, you will be able to store it upright. This monitor, may not be at par with the athletic counterpart but is enough for an average user who is looking to track his basic fitness data.

WaterRower Classic Rowing Machine Video Review

Pros
  • Good built quality.
  • Natural and smooth rowing experience.
  • Ashwood and Honey oak give this machine extra stability.
  • Assembling it is very easy.
  • You can store it upright to save space.
  • The seat and handle are very comfortable.
  • Increase or decrease resistance by adding or removing water from the tank.
Cons
  • The performance monitor lacks advanced features.
  • Some Customers felt that the noise is more.

My Final Opinion

Water Rower Natural Rowing Machine is made of Ash wood and Honey Oak. These woods have a property to absorb the vibration better. Hence you get a very stable piece of equipment. Also, these are hardwoods and are known for their durability. You will not face problems with termites or other woodworms with them. The resistance level is self-regulated, and to increase it, just add more water. However, the S4 monitor lacks some advanced features but most of us won’t be participating in the next Olympics anyway. The best part is, that it can sync up with your heart rate monitor and can help you optimize your workouts. Also, this product comes with a 5-year warranty on the frame and 3 Years warranty on parts so your rowing is pretty much insured.

Best Commercial Rowing Machine For Tall And Obese

You can store it easily, by folding it.

For warranty, this machine has three schemes,  5 years parts/1 year labor for home use, 2 years parts/90 days labor for light commercial use, and 1-year parts for full commercial

Pros

  • Intended for commercial use so it can handle rough usage
  • 16 magnetic resistance and 15 predefined workout programs
  • Air and Magnetic Resistance with Electronic Brake System Technology
  • Ergonomically designed
  • The large monitor is easy to read
  • Adjustable cooling Air-Vent
  • Easy to assemble
  • Built-in Caster Wheels
  • Multiple Warranty Programs for different kinds of usage

Cons

  • Heavier than others
  • After couple of years, clutch bearings can wear out and replacement may be needed

My Final Opinion

Lifecore R100 Commercial Rowing Machine is intended for commercial use. Hence the machine is very sturdy and can tackle very rough usage.

The monitor is very good, however, it is a bit restrictive as it only syncs with PHM devices. The upside is, it can store data of multiple users (max 4) and comes with different warranty schemes for different types of usage.

You can easily assemble it and can be folded up for storage.

Using the 16 levels of magnetic resistance, unleash the beast inside you.

Best Heavy-duty Air Rowing Machine For Overweight Beginners

Stamina X Air Rower

Stamina X Air Rower
This is an air rowing machine that will get the job done. It is a bare minimum air rower that will help you get started with rowing. This is especially good for overweight beginners who are getting started. They are still to develop a workout routine and they are not sure if they will be able to stick with it. Stamina X Air Rower is not expensive and will not burn a hole in your pocket. Also, being an air rower will provide you with the amount of resistance proportional to the effort you will put in. This is great for beginners who typically cannot exert a lot of force. Also, as the body adapts to the workout routine, you can start to row harder to increase the amount of resistance. It comes with a decent-sized LCD monitor, which is capable of monitoring distance, calories burned, speed, workout time, total number of strokes, and strokes per minute. This is sufficient for anyone looking to keep a track of their progress. Also, the workout parameters can be tracked through the müüv app which provides you with smart audio coaching, personalized workouts, and iHeartRadio. Pros
  • Sturdy alloy steel body.
  • Resistance adjusts itself to your rowing intensity.
  • Foldable for easier storage.
  • Ergonomically designed.
  • Comes with a müüv app for a tailed exercise experience.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Affordable.
Cons
  • May not be able to hold up with heavy usage.
  • Not good for advanced users.
  • Strokes per minute may be inaccurate due to the dependency on seat sliding.

My Final Opinion

Stamina X Air Rower is a good rowing machine for beginners or someone who is getting started after a long time. It is sturdy, affordable, and also provides you with custom programs. It will also support users who are above 6 feet and weighs around 250 kgs. However, although this rower is a good choice for beginners, it has its own set of flaws. For example, the strokes count is linked to the seat, and if you do not go through the full range of rowing motion, or if you fall short of it, it will not count the strokes. Also, although the seat is molded, it will leave you sore, after you have used the machine for longer sessions. Plus, the resistance of the machine is dependent on the amount of effort you put in. This is a good thing if you want to progress with your fitness. As with anything, you may lose motivation after some time and may not increase your efforts. Effectively, you will get stuck at the same level.

Best Affordable Hybrid Rowing Machine For Big Guys

SOLE SR500 Rower

Sole SR500 Rower

SOLE SR500 is a hybrid rowing machine that uses both magnetic and air resistance. It is great for the big guys who are starting their weight loss journey.

It is quieter than most of the rowing machines on this list and will provide you with a really good workout.

One thing I love about this rowing machine is that you can change the resistance from the handle itself wirelessly and you need not stop your workout or get off the machine to do that.

However, this machine doesn’t fold and you cannot store it on its head. This may be cumbersome for you if you don’t have a lot of space.

Also, one more thing is that, if you are planning on purchasing this model, check out the manufacturing year. If it is 2014 then the wireless resistance controls will not be present on the handle. To have that feature you need to go for the 2015 model or above.

It has a big backlit LCD display of 5.5″ and is capable of monitoring all the basic data along with strokes per minute.

Also, it comes with a lifetime warranty on the frame, 3 years on parts, and 1 year on home labor.

It is capable of supporting a maximum user weight of 515 lbs or 233.6 kg.

Pros

  • A hybrid rowing machine with wireless resistance control.
  • Silent operation.
  • Good for tall and heavy people.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Affordable.

Cons

  • Not foldable.
  • Foot straps are flimsy.
  • Large footprint.

My Final Opinion

SOLE SR500 Rower is a hybrid rowing machine that is capable of supporting a huge weight. Also, since the resistance is a combination of air and magnet, the operation is quieter than a typical air rower.

However, this machine is louder than a magnetic rowing machine due to the additional air resistance component.

Since you have this air resistance component, the resistance level of this machine will depend to a certain extent on your effort.

Also, the quieter operation will make your roommates or your family members less grumpy and you can enjoy your time with the rowing machine guilt-free.

However, one thing I did not like about this rowing machine is the foot straps. They are flimsy and felt like they are going to break with heavy usage.

That gave me a bit of an unsettling feeling as this may lead you to get injured.

One major thing that I felt which may deter you from getting this rowing machine even if it supports a weight of more than 400 lbs, is that it doesn’t fold at all.

If you are someone who is living in a shared space, this can cause some drama as you may be blocking up a lot of space. I mean, the dimensions of this machine are 94 x 18 x 46 inches which are huge.

If you are ok with that, then this is a good rowing machine that will last you for some time and will provide you with a stable rowing platform, even if you are on the heavier side of the spectrum.

Best Foldable Rowing Machine With Up to 500 lb Weight Capacity

ORGANILAND EliteTopRow Rowing Machine

Organiland EliteTopRow Rowing Machine

ORGANILAND EliteTopRow Rowing Machine is an excellent rowing machine for fat individuals. It has a weight capacity of around 550 lbs and it is made from alloy steel, which gives it its sturdiness.

It is an air rower that has 10 resistance levels. It is perfect for rowers of any fitness level and of almost any weight and height.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and preset workout options to help you achieve your goals efficiently.

Since the machine is made from ally steel, it is very sturdy and will last you for years to come. Also, it is capable of withstanding very rigorous workout sessions as well without complaining.

Although an air rower, it is not as noisy as the air rowing machines mentioned above.

You can easily fold it and can transport it to a storage space with the help of built-in castor wheels.

Pros

  • Sturdy alloy steel body.
  • Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Foldable for easier storage.
  • Preset workout programs.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Suitable for almost any height and weight of users.

Cons

  • Large footprint.
  • Not as quiet as you would like it to be.
  • The monitor is basic.

My Final Opinion

ORGANILAND EliteTopRow Rowing Machine is big on promises and kind of delivers it as well.

Also, by now you may have noticed the uncanny similarity in its appearance with Concept2 Model D. I also observed the same and that made my expectation from this rowing machine higher.

This rowing machine is a near clone of Concept2 Model D and is very sturdy and provides you with a great workout. Also, it is cheaper than Concept2 Model D, making it a very attractive choice for me.

However, there are a couple of problems that were very evident with this rowing machine. Although not a deal-breaker for home use, it may fall short if you are planning to use it for commercial purposes.

First of all, the Bluetooth connectivity of this rowing machine is not very reliable. It keeps on dropping provided you can connect first.

Also, the monitor is not accurate. It will either record the calories and the distance less or more. Sometimes they may not work at all. This glitch may be rectified in subsequent iterations and if they do that, this is a real, much more affordable competitor to Concept2 Model D.

Plus, it is perfect for even very heavy and tall people who want to start off with exercising.

Overall, apart from some minor problems, this is a very good and stable rowing machine for heavier rowers.

Best Heavy-duty Water Rower For Home Gym

Rowing Machine WaterTrac Glider

rowingmachine watertrac glider

Rowing Machine WaterTrac Glider is the second water rower on this list. Like the other one that we have included above, it is also a heavy-duty water rower and is great for people over 400 lbs of weight.

However, the weight capacity of this water rower is much lesser than that of the one mentioned above. To be exact, the weight capacity of this water rower is around 440 lbs.

The build of this water rower is sturdy and the frame is made from steel. The water case is made from double-layer Makrolon and is durable and leak-proof.

To control the resistance of this rowing machine, you can increase the level of water that is present in the tank. This makes it a great choice for any rower be it, a beginner or senior.

Also, it comes with a smart LCD monitor, which can help you to track speed, distance, time, calories burned, and date.

This rower can stand on its head and can be adjusted to any corner of a room making it space-efficient.

Pros

  • Excellent built quality.
  • Space-efficient.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Easy maintenance.

Cons

  • Resistance needs to be manually controlled.
  • The monitor is basic.

My Final Opinion

Rowing Machine WaterTrac Glider is a good water rower. It mimics the feel of water and provides you with the same shooshing sound as you will feel while rowing in actual water.

However, like every other water rower, it has one basic problem. The resistance of this rowing machine needs to be manually controlled with the level of water in the tank.

This is well and good but I don’t like the overall manual intervention that is required for resistance control.

Why?

First of all, you cannot accurately maintain the water level every time. There will be a bit different every time. This means your workout will also be a bit different every time.

Also, once you start your workout with one level of resistance, you have to continue with the same resistance level till the end of the session. Changing it in between the rowing session is too cumbersome and you will have to literally stop to add more or less water to the tank.

So although this rowing machine is good and will provide you with an excellent workout, it is a bit hassle for me with all the things mentioned above.

Best Foldable Rower For Bulky People

STRONGICK Foldable Rowing Machine

strongick foldable rowing machine

STONGICK Foldable Rowing Machine is a strong competitor of ORGANILAND EliteTopRow Rowing Machine.

Both of these rowing machines are similar in both appearance and working and are capable of supporting a user weight of more than 400 lbs.

This rowing machine is sturdy and provides you with a stable platform to start your workout routine.

Also, they come with a large-sized monitor that is capable of tracking time, distance, strokes, speed, and stroke per min.

They are easy to assemble and will get you started in around 30 mins max. Although they say it is around 15-20 min, I hardly doubt it.

This machine comes with 10 resistances and will provide you with an excellent workout. Also, it can be folded and stored easily and can save space when not working out.

Pros

  • Sturdy build.
  • Space-efficient.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Suitable for both beginners and advanced users.
  • Wireless connectivity.
  • Foldable.

Cons

  • The monitor has lag issues.

My Final Opinion

STRONGICK Foldable Rowing Machine is comparable to both C2 and ORGANILAND rowing machines in performance.

However, since this is a more affordable rowing machine than C2, you will find that it is not as robust as C2.

One thing that I didn’t like about this rowing machine is the performance monitor. First of all, it lags, and will not provide you with proper and timely data.

Also, the Bluetooth connectivity also falters. It keeps dropping or you may not be able to use it at all.

One major red flag for me is the customer service of the company and you can check out the other customers’ opinions on Amazon as well.

The customer service of the company is not good and if some kind of a problem occurs with this rowing machine, you may have to resolve it on your own, without depending on the company.

One good news is that the parts of C2 seem to fit this rowing machine and you can replace them with it. This will make the machine more robust for your usage. However, for the bolts, you will have to check as there seems to be some difference between a C2 and STRONGICK.

Overall, apart from the issues mentioned above, this is a good rowing machine and is well suited for heavy beginners.

Best Air Rowing Machine For Fat People Above 400 lbs

Get RXd Xebex Air Rower

Get RXd Xebex Air Rower

Get RXd Xebex Air Rower is a self-powered rower with a maximum user weight capacity of 550 lbs.

This is much higher than 400 lbs and if you are someone who weighs around this weight, this will not give you any trouble due to being overweight.

However, since this is an air rower, the working of this rower is not silent. You will have to deal with the loud whooshing sound that is inherent to that of the air rower.

It is not as high as the Stamina X Air Rower which has a completely open cage for the rowing blades increasing the sound of the spin.

Also, this has a very stable base and the base weighs around 110 lbs for extra stability.

It comes with free gifts and that will only enhance your workout efficiency of yours.

Pros

  • Sturdy build.
  • Space-efficient.
  • Rolls on 4 wheels for easy transport.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Comfortably padded handle and seat.
  • Foldable.

Cons

  • Large footprint.

My Final Opinion

Get RXd Xebex Air Rower is comparable to Concept2 Model D. It is very similar to Concept2, especially the damper.

Also, the seat of the Xebex Air Rower is higher than that of Concept2 Model D, making it a tad more convenient for tall people.

The price point of this air rower is much lesser than that of Concept2 Model D and this makes it a very attractive choice for me.

Further, it comes with a lot of gifts like a back saver pad, EZ Speed Rope, 20 pound premium wall ball, 15 pound slam ball. These are very usable gifts and they further reduce the price of this rowing machine.

Also, personally, I love slam ball. They are a very effective tool for strength training and since rowing is a cardio exercise, this kind of tool added to your home gym makes it complete.

Best multipurpose rower for big and heavy people

Total Gym XLS

Total Gym XLS

Total GYM XLS as the name suggests is a total home gym solution and as a part, it also has rowing capability.

It is a magnetic rowing machine and comes with nearly 80 workout programs. Also, it has 6 resistance levels to suit all your rowing needs.

This is a machine that has a maximum user capacity of 400 lbs and you will not be able to overload it as you will risk breaking the warranty.

It focuses on all the major muscle groups of your body and will provide you with proper cardio, strength training, and stretching.

It also provides you free video access and you can stream workouts from Total Gym TV.

Also, this machine comes pre-assembled, which is a plus as you will be able to get started with your workouts without any delay or hassle.

Pros

  • Sturdy build.
  • Space-efficient.
  • Comes preassembled.
  • Good for cardio and strength training.

Cons

  • No supporting app to accompany workouts.
  • No caster wheels for easy shifting.

My Final Opinion

Total Gym XLS is a complete home gym with rowing capabilities. So if you are trying to get a full rowing experience it may not give you that.

However, as it is a complete home gym it comes with additional functionalities like a squat stand, leg pull, 2 ankle cuffs, and exercise charts.

This is a plus according to me as you don’t have to invest in multiple gym equipment and can have a functional gym at home at a fraction of the price.

However, it has its fair share of drawbacks…it doesn’t have built-in castor wheels. This makes it very difficult to move this 50 lbs.

Also, this doesn’t have a dip bar which may be a letdown for some of us who are focused on that.

The overall built quality is good and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to set up a home gym and doesn’t want to spend a fortune setting it up.

Buyer’s Guide for choosing the best rowing machine of 400 lbs capacity

When you are trying to buy a rowing machine of 400 lb capacity or more, it is bound to be expensive.

So, if you are willing to spend so much mullah, be sure to do a thorough investigation before making a purchase.

At the very least check these below pointers before making a decision.

Choose A Resistance Type

First of all, decide which type of resistance you want. You have basically five options available:

  • Magnetic resistance
  • Air Resistance
  • Water resistance
  • Hydraulic Resistance
  • Elastic Resistance
  • Hybrid resistance

Some rowing machines like Lifecore R100 Commercial Rowing Machine can come with a dual resistance type. But that is rare. Deciding on the type will narrow down your search to 2-3 rowing machines.

Also, based on the intensity of your workout or your fitness level, you may choose something which is easier on you a bit.

For example, if you go for magnetic resistance, most of the time they are more targeted towards the beginners whereas air or water resistance is more focused on intermediate or the advanced rowers.

Weight Capacity

If you are looking for a 400 lb capacity rowing machine, don’t settle on a 350 lb or a 285 pound one.

Some people make this mistake because they are not careful. Sometimes asking a very basic question like “What is the capacity of the rowing machine?” can give you a reality check.

I know you will not make this mistake, but just in case the market is flooded by 250 lb to 350 lb rowing machines and the Under $300 price range can be very tempting.

Also, if you hesitate, the salesperson can try to push a less expensive on you, in order to make a quick buck.

It is better to go for a rowing machine that can accommodate more than 400 lbs. Most of these rowing machines are built for commercial purposes and are built to last.

They are stable and will not give you that unsettling or wobbly feeling when you start to speed things up.

Also, the amount of resistance that they provide is much higher than you get in the lower weight capacity rowing machines. So, once you make such a purchase, you will not have to keep on replacing it, once your fitness starts to get better.

Maintenance Needed

Typically what you are looking for is a low-maintenance rowing machine.

Having it to lube, once in a while or changing the battery is fine. However, it should not be like you are spending a fortune every month.

You are looking for something like Concept2 Model D which can last a lifetime with bare minimum maintenance.

Also, before making a purchase, check what the existing customer has to say about the brand.

  • Are they customer-friendly?
  • Is help available when needed?
  • Do they honor their words, or you will have a nightmare chasing after them?

Another thing you have to check is whether the parts of the rowing machine are easily available or not, or if the company is willing enough to source them for a price.

There are a lot of companies that are selling rowing machines. You can see a huge list when you visit Amazon, however, once the sale is over, you will rarely find some of them sticking around for a smoother after-sales experience.

Footprint

There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to selecting the top rowing machine for 400 lbs weight capacity.

However, not all of them will suit your requirements.

And by requirements I’m not telling about the weight capacity or sturdiness…what I wanted to tell is that, will it suit the space that you have.

You don’t want to purchase a good heavy-weight rowing machine just to find out that it doesn’t fit the space you have and have to either return it or put it on sale.

Instead, first, figure out where you want to place the rowing machine once you have it. Once you have a predetermined space, take its measurements.

Select a rowing machine that will fit that space.

Foldability and space-saving

One big problem with most of the rowing machines for heavy people is that they are not foldable.

They are not made to save space and in general, they have a bigger footprint.

If you have a dedicated gym space or a space to keep the rowing machine permanently set up, then it is well and good.

But what if, you cannot block the space permanently and need to store it away after usage?

In that case, you typically have two options:

  • Rowing machines that are foldable.
  • Rowing machines that stand on their head.

Either of the options is good, and the choice will typically depend on the amount of space you have.

Also, keep in mind that, foldable rowing machines typically take up more space than the ones that stand on its head.

Again, the ones that stand on their head, will take up more vertical space, than the foldable ones.

Track or Rail Length

This is a crucial thing to consider when selecting a rowing machine for heavier and tall people.

The ideal way to go about it is to measure the inseam length of the tallest user who will be using the rower, provided, it is a family rowing machine.

If the rail or track length is not optimal, then the tallest user will not be able to go back all the way and have a proper workout.

Also, in such cases chances of injuries are also more.

If you happen to select a rowing machine that cannot accommodate a person above 6 ft, then check with the company, if they provide longer rails or not.

Some of the companies like Concept2 provide longer rails for taller users at an additional cost.

Also, just as additional info, if the length of the rail is more than 38 inches, then it will be suitable for taller rowers.

Quality of the components

This may seem like a no-brainer, but many people seem to miss this important check when buying a rowing machine for the big and heavy.

For example, if the belt of the rowing machine is made from metal rather than rope, then it will last longer.

Again, if the components are made from metal or high-quality plastic, they will last way longer than that made from cheap plastic.

If you are unsure about the quality of the components, check the warranty that comes with the rowing machine.

Shorter warranties are a tell-tale sign of rowing machines of inferior make.

Single/Dual or double arms (Full motion rowing machines)

Rowing machines come in two varieties as far as the oars are concerned.

You have a single handle rowing machine or a double arm rowing machine.

The advantage of a double arm rowing machine is that they give you a full range of motion for the arms and mimic the actual hand movement as you will find in real-life rowing.

However, since your first and foremost criteria are to have a rowing machine with high weight-bearing capacity, these dual-arm rowing machines may not suit your needs.

Such rowing machines typically have a weight capacity of up to 350 lbs. So, this may be something you want to take into account while selecting a rowing machine to support 400 lbs of weight or more.

Incline

There are some rowing machines available that provide an incline feature. This helps you to target different muscle groups than typical rowing.

However, most of the heavy-duty rowing machines that sport an incline, are capable of supporting a user weight of up to 300 lbs.

There are only a couple of them like the one mentioned above, that can support a user weight of more than 400 lbs.

So, if you are planning to have a rowing machine with an incline, be sure to check its weight capacity as most of them are not made to support a user weight of 400 lbs or more.

Readout/Monitor

Most of the rowing machines including the heavy-duty ones are equipped to track the basic data like time, distance, strokes per min, calories burnt, etc.

However, if you need some additional features or require some specific compatibility with some app, be sure to check out before the purchase.

Also, there are some more advanced monitors that are capable of storing data for multiple sessions and for multiple users along with Bluetooth connectivity.

These features are very convenient if the rowing machine is used by multiple users. Also, this helps you to track your overall progress.

Along with data storing, some of the monitors come equipped with games and rowing programs. This shifts your focus from the process of rowing to winning the game or progressing through the program level. This helps you to progress faster.

These are some handy features to have. Check out if the rowing machine that you are planning to purchase has all these features.

Using  Your Rowing Machine

Purchasing a rowing machine is the easy part. Knowing how to row is a different thing. Having a proper form and using the correct technique is of utmost importance if you don’t want to end up injured. Here is a video on Correct Rowing Technique from the Manufacturer of the hugely popular Concept2 Model D themselves

FAQs

I weigh more than 400 lbs. However, rowing machines that support more than 400 lbs, cost way more. Is it worth spending so much on a heavy-duty rowing machine or a lesser weight capacity rowing machine will get the work done?

Technically, a lesser-weight capacity rowing machine will get the job done. However, there is a catch, or should I say several catches… First of all, a rowing machine that is designed to support a weight of lesser than 400 lbs, is exactly that. It is capable of supporting weight lesser than 400 lbs. Once, you overload it with more than 400 lbs, it puts additional stress on the machine. This will cause it to develop severe wear and tear faster than it supposed to be. Ultimately, it will break down earlier than you would have expected. Now, since this rowing machine may be still within warranty you contact the company only to understand that, since you have overloaded the rowing machine, the warranty is void. So, now you have a broken rowing machine, that effectively halted your fitness progress, plus you will have to burn a hole in your pocket to get it repaired. Instead, I’ll advise you to go for a rowing machine that is designed for your heavier weight. The rowing machines that are designed for big guys have additional support and have sturdier components. This makes them support your weight effectively and the chances of it breaking down are way lesser than the former one. Also, if unfortunately, it breaks down, you can always get it repaired by the company, if it is within warranty. However, I do understand that such rowing machines cost you more than the other ones of lesser weight capacity. If you cannot afford one at this point, you can always save up the money and buy it a couple of months later. In the meantime, you can rent a rowing machine online for your weight and start with your fitness journey. All in all, I would advise that you go for a rowing machine that is built to support your weight to avoid unnecessary hassles and expenses.

What should you check if you are renting a rowing machine for heavier weight capacity?

All the selection criteria mentioned in the buyers’ guide will apply here as well. However, additionally, check for the following things:

Level of wear and tear and any preexisting damage

This is the first thing that you should check when renting a rowing machine for big and heavy people. Also, check if there is any particular damage that is already there. If and once identified, a record that in your renting contract and get an acknowledgment from the renting company. Do this before renting, to avoid any shifting of liabilities on yourself.

Party responsible for the repair of any damage

If damage is sustained while the rowing machine is with you, who will bear the cost of repairing it. Also, what will happen if the damage is sustained, when the rowing machine is in transit from and to the company.

Any discount available for a longer period of time

Check if any discount will be provided by the company if you book the rowing machine for multiple months together. Also, check if there is any referral bonus present with the company.

Party responsible for delivering and collecting the rowing machine

Check how will you get the rowing machine delivered to your doorstep. Also, clarify, who will collect the rowing machine once the contract is over. Also, is there any penalty if you keep the rowing machine once the contract is over.

Any on-site maintenance available in case of breakdown

Since this is a machine, it may break down. Check if there is any onsite maintenance facility available. Otherwise, who will bear the cost to send the rowing machine to the company for repair? Also, in such a case, will you get a replacement rowing machine?

Can a heavy-duty rowing machine help me to lose weight?

Rowing is a cardiovascular exercise and works on your entire body. It can help you to lose weight, however, it depends on the intensity and the amount of effort you are putting into rowing. Whether it is a heavy-duty rowing machine or not, the machine itself will not help you lose weight. You will have to put effort into the same. Also, apart from the effort that you are putting into rowing, you will have to work on your diet as well. Simple changes, like cutting down on junk food, sugar, and aerated beverages will also aid your weight loss process.

Buyer’s Guide

Overall Footprint

Is your stair climber have a footprint that will work with your space? This is one of the primary things that you should look into while purchasing a stair climber. There are many stair climbers available that are very small, but you may want some specific feature that is available in a bigger stair climber. However, that may mean that it will not fit in your space.

Weight Capacity

The weight capacity of your stair climber must be more than the heaviest user who will be using the equipment. This way the longevity of the stair climber will remain intact and you will also be able to avail of any warranty should the need arise.

Resistances Available

Some of the stair climbers come with very low levels of resistance and may not suit your fitness needs. While choosing one for your personal use, check if it meets your fitness standards. You may want to give it a try first before committing funds. However, in this pandemic you may not be able to go out and check each and every machine and may be restricted to order online…make sure to read the return policy, should you have to return the machine due to this.

Movable Arms

Some users prefer it, some don’t. However, everyone will univocally say that this feature will provide you a complete body workout. However, if you don’t prefer this or have some sort of balancing issue, then go for something with a fixed arm.

Stepper Speed

When we buy a piece of equipment for a workout, we generally plan to use it for years to come. However, our body gets pretty used to a particular speed and our fitness level will not improve. Selecting a stepper with multiple stepper speed variations will help you keep working on your fitness level and not bother about plateauing.

Price

We all want that fancy new stepper with loads of features. However, many times we are restricted by our budget. If it doesn’t fit the bill we may as well drop the idea or look for something that will be not as pricey. In fact, this is where mini steppers can be really great and many of them will come in a price range under $50.

FAQs

How long should I stay on the stair climber?

You can stay on a stair climber from 15 min to 30 mins. If you are a beginner, aim for 15 mins and then gradually build up to 30 min. However, if 15 min seems too high for you, do as many mins as is comfortable for you. Also, don’t push yourself to do 30 min at the beginning as you may end up getting injured in the knees.

Are home steppers any good?

Yes, home steppers or mini steppers are good. They will get your heart pumping and you can reap the full benefits of good cardio. Plus, they are so small that they will fit under most of the furniture and can be stored away when not in use. You can truly workout anywhere and whenever you want. However, they are no-frills steppers and you cannot do anything fancy with them. They get the basic work of getting your heart pumping and that they do well.

Which is better stair climber or elliptical?

An elliptical is a low-impact running replacement and stair climbers are meant to mimic stair climbing. So, if you want something gentler on your knees, elliptical will be better. However, elliptical requires are a lot of space and budget and may not be a good choice for home (if you don’t have a spare gym room). Stair climbers on the other hand are more compact and cheaper and will provide you a similar cardio benefit like elliptical. So, for me, a stair climber is a better choice if you don’t have knee issues. Otherwise, go for elliptical.

Is stair climber better than treadmill?

A stair climber is better than a treadmill because you will have to add a lifting motion against gravity when using it. Such a motion is not present when using a treadmill. In other words, you will be putting more strain on your upper legs making this workout more significant for your overall fitness level. Also, there are studies conducted that show that climbing stairs improves lungs and heart health more effectively.

Why is the stair climber so hard?

When you use a stair climber you are effectively lifting your whole body weight on one leg using your glutes and other muscles. If your glutes are not as strong, you will feel more burn and that will make the exercise hard. Also, if you are exercising your hands, then it will make it even tougher as your back, abs, and your whole upper body is now engaged. This means you will have to put more effort into a very short period of time. This is the reason that the stair climber is so hard.

The major differentiation between Concept2 Model D Vs Dynamic

  • Concept2 Model D has the flywheel housed in front of it, however, for Concept2 Dynamic, the flywheel is at the back and below the monorail level.

Concept2 Model D Vs. Dynamic – A head to head comparison

We have covered all the broad differences between these two rowing machines.

Below we have covered all the features and compared them in detail.

Also, we have provided some infographics for your easy understanding…

Now, without any delay, let’s start off with the rest of the comparison.

Seat height

The seat height of the Concept2 Dynamic is a bit more than Concept2 Model D.

The Concept2 Dynamic has a seat height of around 21 inches or 53.34 cm and the seat height of Concept2 Model D is around 14 inches or 36 cm.

This seat height of Dynamic is a bit more than the seat height of a chair and is 7 inches more than the Concept2 Model D.

However, this seat height is very comfortable for elderly people and those who cannot sit down at a lower level.

Also, this higher seating position will give you a real feel of like seating in a real boat.

However, functionality wise there is no difference or any other specific advantage of Concept2 Dynamic.

Monitor

Both Concept2 Model D and Concept2 Dynamic come with the advanced PM5 performance monitor.

This monitor will help you measure your performance in real-time. This will also help you adjust your workout based on this and hence your workout efficiency will increase manifold.

Also, you will get an automatic ‘Just Row’ mode that you can use to start your workout with. However, you may also, use this monitor to configure a customized workout routine just for yourself so that you can train at your optimal level.

The PM5 performance monitor is also capable of measuring your pace, watts, strokes per minute (spm), and calories which is enough for you to measure your performance.

Also, you will be able to measure your own progress by comparing it with your previous performance. That is enough motivation for you to continue your workout routine.

This performance monitor will store your workout data in its internal memory or you can transfer your data to a USB drive for storage.

Also, when not in use, this monitor required 2 D cells to power itself. However, when you are working out, it will derive its power from the flywheel itself and will save the battery life.

It has a backlit LCD and you will not have to squint your eyes to read the data. Also, you can use heart rate monitor straps that have ANT+ compatibility with these rowing machines. They can connect wirelessly to Bluetooth.

You can use the inbuilt games as your workout guide whenever your rowing becomes monotonous. This will keep you competitive and will take away the feeling of working out alone.

Flywheel And Damper

The Flywheel placement of these rowing machines is completely different.

For Concept2 Model D the flywheel is placed right in front of you with the PM5 performance monitor attached to it.

However, for Concept2 Dynamic, the flywheel is placed at the back at the righthand side of the monorail.

Although the placement of the flywheels is different, there is no difference in the way that these two flywheels perform.

You will get that same dependable performance from both of these rowing machines and they will not let you down.

Chain or Cord

Although the performance of these rowing machines is on par with each other, there are some differences.

The kind of chain or cord used in them is different.

For Concept2 Model D, you have a nickel-plated steel chain. This is highly durable and will not rust and also, requires minimal maintenance.

However, Concept2 changed a thing in their Dynamic model and it has a high strength synthetic drive cord. This is also very durable and required minimal maintenance.

Also, since, the drive cord reduces the overall weight, it makes the handle return force lighter that is more similar to the feel of rowing in a boat.

If you are concerned about how to replace the cord, this nifty little video will provide you with a step by step guidance.

Footrests and Handles

Adjustable footrests are present in Concept2 Model D. This footrest is big enough to accommodate almost any size of feet.

Also, the handles are ergonomically designed. This makes it feel comfortable in your hand. Also, the handle features a 10-degree bend that allows you to row with a natural arm and hand position.

For the Concept2 Dynamic model, the footrest is free to move back and forth, and the drive cord connects this with the handle. This also helps to transmit the combined leg and upper body force to the flywheel.

Finish

Both of these rowing machines are great to look at with Concept2 Dynamic gives you a visual compact feel.

However, the finish of both of these rowing machines is the same.

Concept2 Model D and Concept2 Dynamic have a powder coating finish that provides it with a matt look and feels.

However, both of them are aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Another minor difference between these two is that Concept2 Model D is available in both black and grey colors whereas Concept2 Dynamic is available only in grey which somewhat dampens the charm.

Assembly

Assembling both Concept2 Model D and Dynamic is not a problem at all.

Although at the first look this may seem intimidating, it is an absolute piece of cake.

The assembling instruction is great and it will take around 20-30 mins to put it all together.

If you still cannot figure out, here is a little video that will surely help you out:

Concept2 Model D Assembling Instructions:

Concept2 Dynamic Assembling Instructions:

Space required & storage

The footprint of Concept2 Model D is a bit bigger.

The total space requirement for Model D is around 9 feet X 4 feet or 274 cm X 122 cm. This is the total amount of space that you will need in order to perform the rowing properly.

This space is perfect if you have an inseam of up to 38 inches. If you have a longer inseam then you will have to go for the extra-long monorail.

Also, for this, the space requirement for the rowing machine also increases proportionately.

Although, the above-mentioned space is when you are rowing, however, the actual assembled space requirement for Model D is 8 ft X 2 ft or 244 cm X 61 cm.

However, you can easily separate Concept2 Model D into two pieces and transport them using the built-in caster wheels to a convenient storage location.

When folded this rowing machine needs a space of 25 inches X 33 inches X 54 inches or 63.5 cm X 83.8 cm X 137.2 cm.

However, the space requirement for Concept2 Dynamic is a bit less when fully assembled.

The total amount of assembled space required for this rowing machine is around 6.3 ft X 2 ft or 193 cm X 62 cm.

For comfortably rowing on it, you will need a total space of 7.5 ft X 4 ft or 229 cm X 122 cm.

For storage, you will need 6.3 ft X 2 ft. However, you have caster wheels available to transport it to a storage location.

Maintenance

How to care for Concept2 Model D Indoor Rower?

The Concept2 Model D indoor rower has little maintenance and if you stick to the below-mentioned points, you have a virtually indestructible rower.

Daily

  • With a cloth or a non-abrasive scouring pad, wipe the monorail after use. Soap or any non-abrasive glass cleaner may be used.
  • Avoid using acids, bleach, coarse abrasive, and other corrosive agents completely. This will damage the monorail and will reduce its lifespan.

50-hours of home use or every week for institutional use

  • Apply a teaspoon of mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE, or 20W motor oil with a paper towel on the entire chain. Wipe off the excess.
  • Do not use any kind of solvents like WD-40 or any other corrosive material. This will weaken the chain.

250-hours of home use or every month for institutional use

  • Check the entire chain for stiff links. If you find stiff links, lubricate thoroughly. If that doesn’t help, replace the chain.
  • Inspect the chain-handle connection for wear. If you find that the hole has become elongated, or the U-bolt is worn halfway through, you need to replace the entire connection.
  • Tighten the shock cord if the handle does not return all the way to the fan enclosure.
  • Check screws for tightness. Inspect even the screws that are used for assembly.
  • Adjusts the nuts on the Performance Monitor arm joints as necessary.
  • Inspect if there is any dust accumulation inside the flywheel. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean it thoroughly if needed.

How to care for Concept2 Dynamic Indoor Rower?

It is very easy to take care of your Concept2 Dynamic Indoor Rower and is similar to that of the Concept2 Model D.

Daily

  • Wipe the monorail with a cloth or a scouring pad after use. You may use any type of soap or any glass cleaner.
  • Do not use any kind of mineral acids, bleach, coarse abrasives, or any other corrosive agents to clean the monorail.

Weekly for institutional use or After 50 hours

  • Lubricate the cord with a teaspoon of purified mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE oil, or 20W motor oil.
  • Use a paper towel to apply the oil and wipe off any excess. Repeat this process if needed.
  • However, do not clean the cord with any kind of cleaner or solvent like WD-40.
  • Also, do regular inspection of the cord to check for excessive wear and tear. Inspect the entire length of the cord, including the section inside the shuttle channel.
  • If you find this, it is time to replace the cord.

Monthly for institutional use or Every 250

  • Tighten the shock cord if needed.
  • Check for any dust accumulation inside the flywheel with a flashlight. Use a vacuum cleaner if needed.
  • Check the tightness of the screws including the screws that are used for assembling the rowing machine.

The major differentiation between Concept2 Model D Vs E

There are many differentiations between Concept2 Model D and Model E and we will cover all of them below:

  • If you are accustomed with the height of a chair, then you will find Model E more comfortable than Model D which is around 6.0 inches taller than Concept2 Model D. Seat height of Model D is around 14 inches and that of Model E is 20 inches.
  • Concept2 Model E weighs around 3kg/8lbs more than Model D although that doesn’t make Model D less stable.
  • The chain housing of Model E is fully closed and this protects the chain from dust and grim. Model D however has an open casing. However, this doesn’t make much of a difference in the long run and for both of them you need oiling after 40 hours of use.
  • The monitor arm for Model E is longer but fixed. However for Model D it is bendable and short and you can adjust it according to your viewing comfort.
  • Visibility of the data on the monitor is easier in Concept2 Model E than in Model D as the monitor is closed to the user due to the longer arm.
  • The finish of these two rowing machines are different with Model E having a glossy finish and Model D having a matt finish.
  • The leg of Model D at the front is commercial grade aluminum and the rear leag is steel. However, for Model E both the front and rear legs are made of steel and shaped more like a wedge than a strip.
  • Concept2 Model E will cost you around $200 more than Concept2 Model D.

Concept2 Model D Vs. Model E – A head to head comparison

In the above sections, we have provided you with all the required details of these two magnificent rowing machines.

However, there are many rowers who want to dive deep into this.

For them, we have done a more detailed comparison of these two rowing machines.

So, without further ado…let’s dive deep into the nitty-gritty…

Seat height

As mentioned earlier, the seat height of these two rowing machines is a bit different.

Concept2 Model D comes with a rowing seat height of around 14 inches or 36 cm and that of Concept2 Model E comes with a rowing seat height of around 20 inches or 51 cm.

This is a height similar to the chair and is 6 inches more than the Concept2 Model D.

Also, this height is much more comfortable for rowers with special needs and who are elderly.

However, the seat that is attached to the monorail of these rowing machines is essentially the same.

The seat is decently padded and contoured to support your buttocks. However, if you require additional cushioning, that is also available and will cost you only a couple of dollars.

Monitor

Both Concept2 Model D and E are fitted with the PM5 performance monitor. This is the most advanced performance monitor from Concept2 and provides you with a lot of data to measure your progress.

You will get repeatable and comparable data for every ride. It also offers your automatic “Just Row” mode or you can set up a workout routine all by yourself.

This monitor will help you to measure a wide range of data including pace, watts, strokes per minute (spm), and calories.

It will also store this data in its internal memory or an optional USB flash drive.

However, this monitor uses 2 D-Cell when not in use and draws its energy during the workout from the flywheel and thus saves your battery life.

It has a backlit LCD which will not strain your eyes and also has Wireless Bluetooth and ANT+ compatibility for heart rate monitoring and apps.

Also, the free Concept2 ErgData app helps you track your workouts and can sync them with the Concept2 Online Logbook.

There are also games included so that your workout doesn’t become boring and you will be able to get the most out of your sessions.

Flywheel And Damper

Concept2 Model E and Model D machines are air rowers. In other words, both of them use air as resistance to your workout.

However, this also means that you are in control of your workout and the amount of effort you put in is the amount of result you get out of these machines.

The spiral damper allows you to easily adjust the airflow to the flywheel, so you can change the feel of the stroke to suit your preference.

Also, the flywheel design minimizes noise while maximizing the smooth feel.

Chain

In either of these two rowing machines, you will get a nickel-plated steel chain.

This requires very little maintenance and you have to oil it after every 40 hours of use.

This little maintenance is because of this nickel-plating which gives you more time before oiling.

However, there is one major difference in how the chain is housed in Model D and Model E.

In Model D the chain is not fully housed whereas in Model E, it is fully housed and provides the chain extra protection from dust and grime.

However, that doesn’t hugely impact the longevity of the chains and you can enjoy your workouts on either of these rowing machines for a long period of time.

Footrests and Handles

Adjustable footrests are present, whether it is Concept2 Model D or Model E. This helps to keep your foot secure during rowing, no matter the size.

Also, the handles are ergonomically designed. This makes it feel comfortable in your hand. Also, the handle features a 10-degree bend that allows you to row with a natural arm and hand position.

Finish

Both of these rowing machines are great to look at and are majestically beautiful.

However, the finish is a bit different in both of them.

In Concept2 Model D, you will have a powder coat finish, that will provide it with a matt finish look.

For Concept2 Model E, you will have a glossy finish that is very aesthetically pleasing.

Also, both the models are available in Black and Grey colors. However, I find, the black colored models to be more attractive than the grey.

Assembly

Concept2 Model D and Model E may seem to be very big machines with a lot of complications to put them together. However, this is not the case.

Both of these rowing machines are very easy to assemble and you only need to figure out the placement of 8 screws and that’s it. You are ready to go.

In total, you may take only 20-30 mins to put it all together. If you still cannot figure out, here is a little video that will surely help you out:

Space required & storage

Concept2 Model D and Model E are one of the best rowing machines out there.

However, in no way are small rowing machines. Their footprint is large and you will have a lot of space to accommodate it and get rowing.

For Model D, you need 9 feet X 4 feet or 274 cm X 122 cm. This is the total amount of space that you need when you are in the 3rd step of rowing.

In this step, your inclined height gets added to the overall length of the rowing machine, and having that 9 ft space seems to be ideal. Also, when you fold your arms the effective width of the rowing machine increases.

The space requirement increases if you have an inseam of more than 38 inches and you add extra length to the monorail.

Apart from the vertical seat height of Model E, the space requirement is the same as Model D. In other words, Model E requires, 9 feet X 4 feet or 274 cm X 122 cm.

However, the actual assembled size of these machines is lesser and is 8 ft X 2 ft or 244 cm X 61 cm.

If you are intimidated by the size, worry not. You can easily separate the machine into two pieces for easy storage and can transport it to the storage location using built-in castor wheels.

For storage, the size of the folded rowing machines is 25 inches X 33 inches X 54 inches or 63.5 cm X 83.8 cm X 137.2 cm.

Maintenance

Maintenance is very minimal with both of these rowing machines.

You just need to oil them after every 40 hours of use. So, even if you are not a maintenance king, you can get away with it.

What else?

Just do some amount of dusting and check for any kind of lack of smoothness of the sliding of the seat on the monorail.

In other words, the seat roller performance needs to be adequate. If you just wipe the monorail after use, this will increase the longevity of the roller.

Also, observe if the rowing machine is a bit wobbly or not. You may fix it by folding a small newspaper. This generally some up, if the floor level is not even and is not a problem with the actual rowing machine.

Warranty

In terms of warranty also, there is no benefit of choosing Model E over Concept2 Model D:

They come with a limited 2-year warranty. This means you get a limited 2-year and 5-year warranty.

5-Year Limited Warranty applies to Frame Parts. Below is the list of parts included which are subject to change:

  • Rear Leg & Foot Assembly (excludes plastic foot caps)
  • Seat & Seat Frames
  • Foot Stretcher Assemblies
  • Chain Guide Metal Brackets
  • Front Leg(s) & Foot (excludes casters)

  • Stainless Steel Outlet Perf, & Damper
  • Monorail (excludes stainless steel seat track)
  • Frame Lock components
  • Metal Box Frame
  • Monitor Mount Arm

All other parts are covered under a 2-year limited warranty.

  • Visit a post-gym equipment center. You can buy the machine for cheap but you may have to fix it up a bit.
  • Post in your local forums to check if anyone has a Concept2 Model D or Concept2 Model E available. But make sure to inspect them before purchasing.
  • Follow C.R.A.S.H.-B SPRINTS. They generally sell Concept2 Model D machines at a heavy discount after the championship.

Does the Concept 2 rower fold up?

Yes, a Concept 2 rower fold up, be it Model D or Model E. They get separated easily into two pieces and then can be conveniently put aside in a corner or a closet easily. The frame locking mechanism on the Model D and Model E makes storing them very easy and safe.

Here is how you can separate your Concept2 Indoor Rowing Machine for storage:

Where do you buy replacement parts for Concept 2 Rower?

You can buy replacement parts for Concept 2 Rowers like Concept 2 Model D and Concept 2 Model E from Concept 2 website itself or by calling 800-245-5676. You may be able to source these parts from elsewhere, but, since these machines themselves are expensive, you should always go for genuine parts. Otherwise, you may end up breaking down the whole machine and the whole experience is not worth it.

Is the durability comparable to the price?

Yes, the durability of Concept2 Model E and Model D is comparable to the price. Both Model D and E are commercial-grade rowing machines and have commercial-grade aluminum and steel. They have sturdy front and rear legs. The powder coating of Model D and the glossy coating of Model E is meant to enhance the durability of these two rowing machines. However, the glossy finish of Model E makes it more durable. The chains of both of these models are nickel-plated steel which makes the chain more durable. Some say that both Model D and Model E are virtually indestructible with the minimal maintenance that the Concept2 website details. Even after that if you run into trouble, please take the help of the customer support which is very helpful and will try to solve your problem as soon as possible.

Is the Concept 2 noisy?

Yes, both Concept2 Model D and Model E are noisy. This is due to the fact that they are air rowers. Air rowers, by the very nature, are noisy as it whirls through the air making that loud swooshing sound. However, it is not so loud that you cannot listen to the TV. If the noise bugs you too much, then use some earplugs to dampen the noise.

Is the Concept 2 Model E comfortable to use?

Yes, Concept 2 Model E is comfortable to use especially for the taller users and users with balance or mobility issues. This is due to the 6 inches added height than Model D. Also, the stability of Model E is exceptional and you will not feel any wobbling during using even at high speed. Also, the rest of the features are the same and as exceptional as Model D.

Does the Concept 2 Model E fit all height and weight ranges?

Yes, the Concept 2 Model E fits all height and weight range up to 500lbs. Since Model E is taller than Model D it is especially suitable for rowers of height more than 6 ft. However, there is a limitation in terms of the inseam. Concept2 Model E can fit an inseam up to 38.0 inches. However, since the monorail is around 54 inches (137 cm) in length, that is not sufficient. If you have an inseam that is more than 38.0 inches, go for an extra-long monorail. Otherwise, the weight capacity of both Model E and Model D is the same.

What parts of the body does it work out?

Concept2 Model D and Model E will give you a full-body workout and is also great for cardio. The muscles group that it will work on are rhomboids or upper back, latissimus dorsi or the midback at either side of the torso, quadriceps or the front of the thigh, your core muscles, and your biceps and forearms. Also, due to the sliding motion of the seat, it works on calves, hamstrings, glutes, obliques, pecs, triceps, deltoids, and lats to engage in the activity.

What does adjusting the damper do?

Adjusting the damper in Concept2 Model D and E is another way to control the resistance of the rowing machine. The damper controls the amount of air flowing through the flywheel and will change the complete feel of the rowing. In Model D and E, the damper can be adjusted from 1-10. If the setting is higher (6-10) the feel of rowing will be heavier and if the setting is lower (1-5) the feel of rowing will be lighter. You should experiment with your Concept2’s damper settings and stick to the one comfortable for you right now and then gradually build from there.

Conclusion

In the above guide, we have provided all the required information about “Concept2 Model D Vs E“.

You will be surely able to pick-up the right one for your needs.

However, we found that Concept2 Model D is not that different from Model E and it doesn’t make any sense to pay those extra $200 unless you have any special needs.

This is the reason we chose Concept2 Model D over Concept2 Model E.

Buyer’s Guide

How to select the best rowing machine for heavy people?

When selecting the best rowing machine for heavy people, always keep the below criteria in mind:

Weight Capacity

This is probably the most important factor when selecting a rowing machine for the people who are on the heavier side.

What I would suggest is to go for a rower that can accommodate a weight capacity of at least 20 – 30 lbs more.

This way you will get the required stability from the machine and it will also be able to support your weight easily.

Resistance Type

There are 4 kinds of resistance for rowing machines. Air, Water, Magnetic, and Hydraulic. As I’ve explained about them in detail in other articles, I will not repeat here. You may read about them, here.

Choose the one which suits your need the most.

Also, check the number of higher resistances available for a rowing machine. Sometimes they are very few and may not be suitable past the beginner phase.

Your rowing machine should also have a wide range of resistances.

When you are just starting to work out, this is crucial…otherwise, you may end up injuring yourself.

Quality

There are many rowing machines available for a relatively cheaper price. For example, a rowing machine like this one is less than the price of your resistance band.

However, you get what you pay for. These machines don’t last long and you will have to keep spending on their maintenance or you may have to replace them every couple of months.

Always start off with something with which you can stick for some time. This will provide you with a more predictable outcome.

Space needed

If you are living in a basement or in a small apartment, you are starved for space. In that case, you should go for something that will fit in a small place.

Here are the best rowing machines for small spaces.

You may also take a look at these rowing machines fit that under beds.

Comfort

When working out, comfort is of paramount importance.

Here is what you should check while selecting your rowing machine:

  • Well-cushioned seat.
  • Anti-skid and cushioned handles.
  • Smooth sliding.
  • Adjustable monitor.
  • Controls are reachable.
  • The rowing machine is stable while you are sliding.

Assembly

Easier the assembly the better. There are some rowing machines that are very easy to assemble. It will hardly take a couple of minutes for you to get it up and running.

However, there are a lot of them out there, which are very hard to assemble and will give you only hours of work and frustration.

Go through the comments sections and you will be able to find out which are worth your time. People may not say when they have a good experience, but they will definitely speak up when they have a bad experience.

Warranty

Many of them have a lifetime warranty on frame and 90 days on parts. However, there are some which give you a lot longer warranty.

So, read the warranty terms carefully so that you don’t have to struggle while trying to search for a replacement.

Price

This is completely up to you. However, anything below $250 is generally trash. So, try to check in that range. Else, you can pick up during the big sales.
